We discovered a rare and beautiful manhole cover in Rosenthaler platz. By the typography design we estimate that it's dating back to the 1940s. Its bold typography simply reads Feuerwehr - Fire Department.
A functional marker from another era, cast in heavy iron and carrying the traces of time.
Technique
This time we experimented by taking a silicone impression directly from the original manhole cover on the street.
From this mold, the cover was re-cast and turned into a printing plate to hand-print this series in relief printing technique.
We are truly fascinated by the simplicity and typographic design of this unique street cover. It's definitely a true undiscovered urban artwork.
The ink we use is water-based and eco-friendly. It is 100% free from formaldehyde, white spirit and APEO and suited for major ecology and social responsibility standards: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and the better GOTS.
This print is permanent and can of course be washed.
To maximize the life of this product, wash similar colours together at 30°C. Wash and iron inside-out and use a mild detergent...maybe, an eco-friendly one!
